Southee to Rahane, out Pant Run Out!! Absolute shocker from India! A run out is always the worst mode of dismissal in Test cricket and when it is through a bad mix up as this one, makes things all the more worse. This was tapped gently towards the off-side by Rahane and he just kept on running, despite Pant’s evident disinterest in the single.
In the end, the young man was forced to go across, even as Ajaz at backward point threw a direct hit from the side-on angle at the keeper’s end. It just about dislodged the bails and Pant was never in the frame. Initially, it seemed like the throw hadn’t hit the bulls-eye and NZ appeared to have missed a clear cut chance with Watling failing to get across. Fortunately for the hosts, it indeed was a direct hit. Unlucky dismissal for Pant but I reckon Rahane needs to take the blame here.
