On Tuesday at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy, Jess Jonassen of the Delhi Capitals made her mark in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) following an unremarkable performance in the tournament opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
The Australian all-rounder’s impact was significant as she first scored a quickfire 42 not out from just 20 balls, propelling the Capitals to a commanding total of 211/4. Jonassen then proceeded to take two wickets in her very first over, immediately putting the UP Warriorz on the defensive.
Of note was her first dismissal, which was a crucial one as Alyssa Healy fell prey to Jonassen’s deception after looking aggressive for a brief period. Healy had been playing well, hitting five fours to score 24 off 16 balls and giving the Warriors the start they needed in their chase.
But in the fourth over against Jonassen, she attempted a lofted shot which resulted in a thick outside edge. Jonassen’s pace did the trick, and the ball was easily caught by Radha Yadav at point to seal the deal.
Having successfully deceived her Australian counterpart, Jonassen was visibly excited and performed a little celebratory dance with her hands, providing Healy with a memorable send-off. The netizens took notice of Jonassen’s impressive send-off dance and expressed their reactions on social media.
