Suryakumar Yadav’s series of three consecutive golden ducks during the recent ODI series against Australia at home has sparked a significant debate about India’s prospective batting line-up for the upcoming 2023 World Cup.
Despite being the top-ranked T20I batter and replacing the injured Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar was unable to impress the veterans and experts, raising concerns about India’s No.4 position. The discussion has also prompted India legend Yuvraj Singh to make a bold statement regarding Suryakumar’s performance.
Despite his impressive T20 form, Suryakumar was never India’s top pick for the team, as Iyer had established himself as the No. 4 batsman since the last World Cup. Unfortunately, Iyer’s back injury recurred during the Ahmedabad Test against Australia, forcing him out of the home ODI series.
This provided Suryakumar with an opportunity to showcase his skills and stake his claim as a first-choice player for the upcoming World Cup. Unfortunately, Suryakumar’s luck took a turn for the worse as he faced two unplayable deliveries from Mitchell Starc, resulting in back-to-back golden ducks in the first two matches. His misfortune continued in the third game as fate dealt him a similar hand against Ashton Agar.
Yuvraj has expressed his support for the Indian cricketer, believing that he will make a strong comeback and play a crucial role in the ODI World Cup if given the chance.
“Every athlete faces highs and lows in their career, and we’ve all gone through it at some point. I firmly believe that @surya_14kumar is a vital player for India and will have an important role in the #WorldCup if he gets the opportunities. Let’s support our players, because our Surya will rise again,” he tweeted.
