On April 3, the Fairbreak competition began in Kowloon, featuring a match between Falcons Women and Tornadoes Women. Falcons Women batted first and scored 150/6, with Theertha Satish and Mariko Hill contributing 57 and 38 runs respectively.
Marizanne Kapp, a key player for Delhi Capitals in the Women’s Premier League, was dismissed for a golden duck but made an impressive comeback with the ball, taking three wickets for just four runs in three overs.
Kapp’s first wicket was that of Dane van Niekerk, who happens to be Kapp’s wife, making them the second same-sex couple among international players. Van Niekerk, who was signed by Royal Challengers Bangalore for the Women’s Premier League but did not get a chance to play, edged Kapp’s delivery to the wicket-keeper for a catch.
Although van Niekerk was uncertain about whether she had nicked the ball, Kapp confirmed it and refrained from celebrating the wicket, while her teammates were thrilled with the result.
Van Niekerk lost her wicket on only the second ball of the innings, returning to the pavilion without scoring any runs. As expected, social media was abuzz with tweets after Kapp dismissed van Niekerk, who are known to be supportive of each other both on and off the field.
