The clash between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore is always highly anticipated in the IPL season, both on and off the pitch. Both teams boast international superstars, but it also gives fans a chance to see the two biggest names in Indian cricket, Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni, face off across two generations.
However, Tuesday’s match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore had greater significance, as it may be the last encounter between the two cricketing titans. CSK’s 41-year-old skipper is inching closer to retirement, and the stands were flooded with Whistle Podu Army fans wearing the franchise’s yellow.
When the fan-favorite Dhoni walked out for the toss at the sold-out venue, the fans chanted his name regardless of which team they were supporting.
RCB skipper Faf du Plessis received a loud ovation when he won the toss and announced his decision to bowl. However, this paled in comparison to the reception that Dhoni received when it was his turn to speak.
Presenter Mpumello Mbangwa acknowledged the overwhelming support for the former Indian skipper, and when he wished Dhoni luck at the end of their interaction, the cheers drowned out his voice. Dhoni had to ask for the question to be repeated, but he couldn’t help but grin widely to show his appreciation for the support and the importance of the match.
