Mohammad Amir opens up on getting British citizenship to play in the IPL

Mohammad Amir, the former Pakistani fast bowler, is on the verge of acquiring British citizenship, which would grant him the opportunity to represent England and potentially participate in the IPL. The talented left-arm pacer recently shared his aspirations to compete in the IPL once he obtains his British passport.

In 2016, Mohammad Amir entered into wedlock with Narjis Khan, a British citizen and lawyer. Having established his residence in the United Kingdom in 2020, he is now on track to become eligible for British citizenship by the year 2024.

During an interview with ARY News on July 2, Mohammad Amir discussed his future in international cricket and was specifically asked about his potential participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL) once he acquires his British Passport.

Amir stated, “Firstly, I will not play for England as I have already represented Pakistan. Secondly, regarding the IPL, there is still one more year to go. We cannot predict the future circumstances. I prefer to take things step by step. We never know what tomorrow holds, so I refrain from speculating about playing in the IPL in 2024.”

He further added, “I cannot predict where I will be in a year’s time. The future remains uncertain for all of us. Once I receive my passport, I will assess the best opportunities available and make the most of them.”

It is worth noting that Pakistani players have been barred from participating in the IPL since 2008. However, all-rounder Azhar Mahmood, after acquiring British citizenship, secured an IPL contract with the Punjab Kings in 2013 and later played for the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Once Mohammad Amir obtains his British passport, he will become eligible to register for the IPL auction. If he receives a bid from any franchise, he could become one of the few players based in Pakistan to have played in the league.

Amir has a commendable track record against Team India and has performed well in Indian conditions. Although he retired from international cricket in December 2020, he continues to participate in leagues worldwide and has achieved notable success with the ball.
