English fast bowler Steven Finn has decided to retire from cricket in all formats. The experienced player is ending his career due to a knee injury that has prevented him from participating in most matches this year. Finn’s retirement marks the conclusion of his 125 appearances for the England team, including 36 Test matches.
He shared his retirement news through a statement, expressing his pride in representing his country and playing the sport he’s passionate about at a professional and elite level. In his statement, Finn also candidly discussed the challenges posed by his injury, which ultimately influenced his retirement choice.
In his statement, the player began by acknowledging his surrender to the ongoing battle with injuries that have plagued him for nearly a year. Finn recognizes that persisting at the highest level of play is no longer viable for him. Consequently, he has chosen to step away from the taxing physical demands of the sport and opt for a role as an observer on the sidelines.
He announced, “Today, I am officially retiring from all forms of cricket, effective immediately. Over the past year, I’ve been engaged in a struggle with my body, and I’ve come to terms with the fact that I cannot conquer it.”
Reflecting on his cricket journey encompassing Middlesex, Sussex, and the England national team, Finn shared, “I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have pursued cricket professionally since my debut with Middlesex in 2005. While the path has had its challenges, I’ve cherished every moment… My gratitude extends to Sussex Cricket, especially for their unwavering support over the last year and for embracing me wholeheartedly when I joined the Club last season.
