Western Australia’s batting dominance was evident at Bellerive Oval on Wednesday, with D’Arcy Short’s fourth List A century leading them to a comfortable 52-run victory over Tasmania.

Initially, it seemed the visitors were poised to reach close to 350 runs, with skipper Sam Whiteman and Nick Hobson showing aggressive intent.

However, Tasmania was fortunate to limit the target to a more achievable 321, thanks to an outstanding catch by Charlie Wakim. Whiteman, just one run shy of a rapid half-century, unleashed a powerful shot off Billy Stanlake’s delivery, seemingly destined for a six over midwicket.

Despite the commentator’s premature declaration, Wakim had different plans. Demonstrating exceptional anticipation and athleticism, the 32-year-old positioned himself perfectly, leaping into the air to snatch the ball with a full-stretch dive.

Wakim’s own astonishment was evident, yet the jubilant reaction of his teammates more than compensated for his subdued celebration, marking a memorable moment for the team.
