India seemed poised for a commanding victory to kick off the three-match series against South Africa after posting an imposing total of 265/8, courtesy of Smriti Mandhana’s sixth ODI century.
The bowlers complemented the batters’ effort by quickly dismantling the Proteas’ top order, reducing them to 72/4 by the 22nd over. This left incumbent batters Suné Luus and Annerie Dercksen facing a steep uphill battle.
However, a sequence of blunders shortly thereafter encapsulated the visitors’ dismal performance, culminating in a fifth wicket loss in an embarrassingly farcical manner.
Facing debutant Asha Shobhana, Annerie attempted to take on the leg-spinner with a wild swing across the line but only managed to get a leading edge. The ball sailed towards point where Jemimah Rodrigues had to move just a few steps within the 30-yard circle.
Despite the ball coming straight to her, Jemimah displayed dismal fielding skills, letting the ball slip through her fingers. Annerie, who had casually strolled to the other end assuming the catch would be taken, was granted an undeserved reprieve.
Meanwhile, Luus remained in her crease, watching the ball, and after it dropped to the ground, Jemimah had ample time to toss it to the wicket-keeper for an easy run-out.

Despite her embarrassment over the shocking drop, Jemimah couldn’t help but laugh at the amateurish display, much like her teammates. Social media was abuzz with amusement over the incident, as Twitter users flocked to share their reactions.
