WATCH : Australia strike back after poor batting show on first day of first Test

West Indies kicked off their new World Test Championship journey on a high, dismantling Australia for just 180 on the opening day of the first Test at Kensington Oval, Barbados. The hosts dominated the first two sessions, thanks to a lethal bowling performance led by Jayden Seales, who claimed a five-wicket haul with figures of 5/60. Shamar Joseph was equally impactful, removing Australia’s top three and finishing with 4/46. However, Australia struck back late in the day, leaving West Indies struggling at 57/4 by stumps.

Australia, after choosing to bat first, stumbled early as young opener Sam Konstas was trapped LBW by Joseph for just 3 in the fourth over. Usman Khawaja tried to steady the innings but found little support from the other end.

Joseph and Seales dismissed Cameron Green and Josh Inglis cheaply, reducing the visitors to 22/3. Khawaja formed a promising partnership with Travis Head, who counterattacked effectively. However, Khawaja fell for 47, and the collapse soon followed.

The Australians lost five wickets for just 32 runs after being 111/3, slipping to 143/8. Travis Head was the standout performer with a brisk 59 off 78 balls, featuring nine boundaries. Captain Pat Cummins added some late resistance with a quick 28 off 18 balls, pushing the total past 150 before the innings folded. Joseph’s fiery spell continued to haunt Australia, showcasing his growing stature in red-ball cricket.

Despite the strong showing with the ball, West Indies faltered with the bat. Mitchell Starc struck twice early, removing both openers Kraigg Brathwaite and John Campbell within the first seven overs, leaving the home side at 16/2. A brief recovery came through a 36-run stand between Keacy Carty and Brandon King, but that too was short-lived.

Australia ended the day with momentum on their side, claiming two more wickets in quick succession to reduce West Indies to 57/4 by the close of play. After a dominant start with the ball, the hosts now face a stern test with the bat as they look to seize control of the match on Day 2.
