Cheteshwar Pujara, one of India’s finest Test specialists and fondly known as “Mr. Dependable” and “Wall 2.0,” has announced his retirement from international cricket on August 24. His decision brings the curtains down on a glorious career that lasted more than a decade. At 37, Pujara leaves the game as the pillar of India’s Test batting unit during the 2010s, a period when his resilience and determination became the team’s hallmark in the longest format.
Making his Test debut in 2010, Pujara quickly established himself as the natural successor to Rahul Dravid in India’s middle order. Renowned for his composure and technique, he became the player India relied upon in difficult conditions, often grinding out tough innings against the best bowling attacks. From 2012 to 2023, he was at the heart of many of India’s memorable Test victories, including the historic series wins in Australia, where his grit and patience played a defining role.
Over the course of his career, Pujara featured in 103 Tests and scored 7,195 runs at an average of 43.60. His tally includes 19 centuries and 35 half-centuries, showcasing his ability to consistently deliver under pressure. Following his retirement, many fans wondered whether the man known as “Wall 2.0” would be entitled to a pension from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Under the updated 2022 pension scheme, former Indian cricketers now receive enhanced benefits depending on their playing record. This initiative was introduced to honor the service and contributions of those who have represented the country at the highest level.
As part of this policy, Pujara will receive ₹70,000 per month, which amounts to ₹8.4 lakh annually. This financial support serves as recognition of his immense contribution to Indian cricket and ensures his post-retirement life remains secure. The scheme highlights BCCI’s efforts to value and support its former players, ensuring that legends like Pujara, who dedicated their careers to the red-ball game, are well taken care of even after hanging up their boots.
