Watch: Event official walks out with the Asia Cup alongside Naqvi

The 2025 Asia Cup has seen more drama off the field than on it, with controversies overshadowing the cricketing action. From heated handshake disputes to formal complaints lodged by both boards, India and Pakistan have dominated headlines for reasons beyond the pitch. The latest spark came when a video surfaced online showing PCB Chief and ACC President Mohsin Naqvi walking out with an ACC staffer before seemingly leaving the stage with the trophy in hand.

Tensions had already been simmering between the two sides. After the group stage clash, the Indian team reportedly informed tournament officials that they would not accept the Asia Cup trophy directly from Naqvi. Their stance was made official ahead of the final on September 28, when Indian management reiterated their refusal to receive the cup from his hands.

In response, neutral representatives from the Emirates Cricket Board and other dignitaries present agreed to step in and handle the presentation. However, Naqvi insisted on fulfilling the role himself. The deadlock delayed the ceremony by more than 45 minutes, creating an unusual spectacle on a stage meant to celebrate the champions.

During the wait, presentation host Simon Doull continued proceedings by announcing sponsors and handing out medals to the Pakistan players. Meanwhile, the Indian squad kept their distance. After nearly 90 minutes of stalemate, Doull eventually confirmed that India would not take the trophy, prompting Naqvi to walk away with it.

The Indian players, however, still took home their individual honors, including the Player of the Match award, from alternative officials. As a symbolic protest, the team then gathered on the field and playfully mimed lifting an “invisible trophy,” sending a pointed message about their displeasure with the administration.
