Gill and Jadeja take India to strong position in second Test

The West Indies ended day two of the second Test in Delhi at 140/4, still trailing India by a massive 378 runs. Shubman Gill continued his sensational form, scoring yet another century — his first at home as captain — to guide India to a huge total of 518/5 before declaring. Ravindra Jadeja then starred with the ball, claiming three wickets to put the visitors under immense pressure.

Starting the day at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Gill looked set to extend India’s dominance, but a terrible mix-up led to Jaiswal’s run-out in just the second over. Jaiswal’s brilliant innings ended at 175, which included 22 boundaries from 258 balls. Nitish Reddy, promoted to number five, provided quick runs, adding a fluent 43 off 54 balls.

Gill, unaffected by the run-out, brought up his half-century with a classy flick off Jayden Seales as India crossed 400 before lunch, finishing the session comfortably at 427/4.Gill carried his momentum into the second session, completing his fifth Test century of the year with authority. Once past three figures, he accelerated, smashing a six and three fours in quick succession.

Dhruv Jurel offered steady support at the other end, building a 102-run stand before his dismissal prompted India’s declaration. Gill remained unbeaten on 129 from 16 fours and two sixes, while Jomel Warrican was the best of the West Indies bowlers with figures of 3/98.The Windies openers, John Campbell and Tagenarine Chanderpaul, started cautiously against Bumrah and Siraj.

They managed to survive the initial burst but suffered a setback when Campbell was dismissed by a spectacular reflex catch from Sai Sudharsan at short leg. The visitors went into tea at 26/1, already facing a mountain to climb. After the break, Chanderpaul and Alick Athanaze counterattacked, adding a brisk 66 runs for the second wicket. Athanaze played confidently against Kuldeep Yadav, hitting multiple boundaries, while Chanderpaul matched his intent against Jadeja.

However, Jadeja broke the stand as KL Rahul took a sharp catch in the slips. The West Indies slipped from 87/1 to 107/4 before Shai Hope and Tevin Imlach steadied the innings, ensuring no further damage by stumps. Jadeja finished the day with 3/37, while Kuldeep claimed one wicket, keeping India firmly in control.
