Rain ruins Gill–SKY show as the first T20I in Canberra ends with no result

India’s innings began with intent as opener Abhishek Sharma charged down the track on the very first ball against Josh Hazlewood, showing early aggression. After a few mistimed swings, he found his rhythm with a boundary to end the over. Facing Xavier Bartlett next, Abhishek added two more fours despite some risky shot selections. Shubman Gill, at the other end, joined the fun with a top-edge that raced for four against Hazlewood, putting pressure on the Australian bowlers.

Gill continued the momentum by greeting Nathan Ellis with two crisp boundaries in three deliveries, surviving a close LBW call in between. However, Ellis had the last laugh as his clever slower delivery deceived Abhishek, who holed out to mid-off for 19 off 14 balls. Suryakumar Yadav, battling a rough patch in T20Is, came in next and announced his arrival in style, flicking Hazlewood for a magnificent six over square leg.

India were looking solid at 43/1 after five overs when rain interrupted play. A 45-minute delay followed, reducing the contest to 18 overs per side. Once play resumed, India picked up right where they left off, with Gill cracking a boundary off Marcus Stoinis and SKY dispatching Matt Kuhnemann for a four and a six. The duo’s attacking intent kept India ahead of the game despite the shortened format.

Bartlett returned to the attack in search of a breakthrough but found little luck as the Indian batters continued to dominate. Josh Philippe dropped a crucial chance off SKY, allowing him to capitalize and further punish Ellis with two more boundaries and a towering six in the next over. The pair looked well set to launch a final assault in the closing overs.

Unfortunately for the visitors, rain returned—this time with greater intensity—halting India’s charge at 97/1. After a lengthy one-hour delay, the umpires had no choice but to call off the match. What promised to be an entertaining T20 opener ended without a result, leaving fans disappointed as the Gill–SKY partnership’s fireworks were cut short by the weather.
