On Saturday, at the Wankhede Stadium, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) secured a remarkable victory over their arch-rivals Mumbai Indians, marking their second consecutive win in the ongoing IPL 2023 season. However, during the match, the MS Dhoni-led team suffered two significant injuries.
Before the game, England Test captain Ben Stokes was already sidelined due to an injury, and fast bowler Deepak Chahar had to leave the field with a hamstring injury during the first over of the match. On Sunday, CSK provided a significant update on the two injuries.
CSK disclosed that Ben Stokes was absent from the Mumbai match due to a minor toe injury. The all-rounder from England had participated in the first two games, scoring 15 runs with the bat and bowling an over against the Lucknow Super Giants, despite having concerns about a knee injury.
After bowling the fifth delivery in the first over of the match, Chahar injured his hamstring. Despite receiving assistance from the team physio, he left the field after completing the over.
According to a statement by the Chennai Super Kings, Chahar will undergo scans to determine the severity of the injury once the team returns to Chennai. The medical staff of CSK is closely monitoring both players and will provide them with all the necessary support for their recovery.
Chahar has suffered a hamstring injury for the third time in the past year. He previously injured his hamstring in February 2022, and while rehabilitating from that injury, he suffered a back injury that caused him to miss the entire IPL season and sidelined him for six months.
His stiff back also ruled him out of the T20 World Cup in October, only two months after his return. In December of the same year, he walked out of an ODI game against Bangladesh after bowling three overs with a hamstring injury. Chahar only returned to the sport in IPL 2023.
