Daniel Vettori feels R Ashwin will not make to India Playing 11 for WTC Final

The highly anticipated WTC Final 2023 between Team India and Australia is set to take place at the Kennington Oval from June 7. Ahead of the much-awaited clash, Australian assistant coach Daniel Vettori expressed his belief that off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin might not secure a spot in Team India’s Playing 11 for the WTC Final due to the prevailing conditions.

Daniel Vettori shared his thoughts with the local media prior to Australia’s training session at the Kent County Cricket Ground in Beckenham on June 1. He revealed that the team management had extensively discussed Team India’s potential bowling attack for the WTC Final.

“Considering the batting prowess and the success Ravindra Jadeja has had at the No.6 position, I believe he will be in the playing XI. The dilemma then arises with regards to the fourth seamer and the all-rounder role, with Shardul Thakur and Ravichandran Ashwin being strong contenders. Both are excellent options,” stated Daniel Vettori before Australia’s training session.

“Ashwin is an exceptional bowler and would be a first-choice selection in most teams, but due to the team’s combinations, he might miss out,” added the Australian assistant coach, discussing Team India’s Playing 11 for the WTC Final.

When talking about the conditions at the Kennington Oval, Vettori remarked, “We expect The Oval to behave as it usually does. It generally provides a good pitch, but as the game progresses, it can offer assistance to the spinners.”

It’s important to note that Ravichandran Ashwin has taken a total of 18 wickets at an average of 28.11 from 7 matches in England, having played just one Test at The Oval. However, his recent performances in red-ball cricket have been exceptional, particularly against Australia and Bangladesh.

During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy held between February and March, R Ashwin claimed 25 wickets, emerging as the leading wicket-taker. Ravindra Jadeja also contributed significantly with 22 wickets, aiding Team India in securing a 2-1 series victory against Australia.

While Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have been a formidable spin duo for the Indian team in recent years, it may prove challenging for the team management to accommodate both of them in English conditions. The management might be enticed to utilize Shardul Thakur as the seam-bowling all-rounder, which would provide a better balance to the side.
