‘He can break Virat Kohli’s 973 runs record in IPL’ – Ravi Shastri

With a total of 973 runs in the 2016 edition of the IPL, Virat Kohli, the prominent batsman of Team India, holds the record for the highest number of runs scored in a single season. According to former Indian coach Ravi Shastri, the only player with the potential to surpass Kohli’s record is Shubman Gill, given his current impressive form.

Having scored four centuries and clinched the Orange Cap, Virat Kohli was in exceptional form during the IPL 2016 season. He led his team to the final of the tournament, only to lose to Sunrisers Hyderabad, led by David Warner.

During a Q&A session on Star Sports, Ravi Shastri was asked about who he thought could break Virat Kohli’s record of 973 runs in IPL. Shastri suggested that an opening batsman would be the best bet, as they would have more opportunities to score runs. He specifically mentioned Shubman Gill as a potential candidate due to his good form and position at the top of the order.

Shastri went on to explain that scoring 80-100 runs in consecutive innings would be crucial for any player hoping to break the record, as this would quickly add up to a total of 300-400 runs. However, he acknowledged that breaking Kohli’s record would be a tough task for any batter.

Shastri emphasized that being an opening batsman was an advantage as it allowed for more opportunities to score runs, something that a middle-order batter may not have. He also noted that opening batsmen get two extra matches and innings, which could make a difference in breaking the record.
