India and Australia fined for slow over rate, Shubman Gill punished as well

Despite India’s crushing 209-run defeat in the World Test Championship final on Sunday, the aftermath of the match continues to stir controversy. Both India and Australia have been penalized for slow over rates. India will forfeit their entire match fees, while the champions, Australia, will face an 80% reduction in their match fee.

India fell short by five overs, considering time allowances, whereas Australia was behind by four overs. According to an official release, “India was found to be five overs below the target, accounting for time allowances, while Australia fell four overs short.

As per Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players are fined 20% of their match fee for each over their team fails to bowl within the allocated time.” Furthermore, Shubman Gill, the Indian player, will face additional penalties for his criticism of the controversial decision surrounding his dismissal.

TV Umpire Richard Kettleborough ruled a catch taken by Cameron Green in the slips as legitimate, which sparked significant backlash on social media. Gill later took to social media himself, appearing to question the umpire’s judgment. Consequently, Gill will be fined a total of 115% of his match fee.

The official statement disclosed, “India’s Shubman Gill will also face further sanctions for seemingly criticizing the decision to declare him out on the fourth day of the Test, violating article 2.7, which pertains to public criticism or inappropriate comments regarding an incident occurring in an international match.”
