England’s star batsman, Joe Root, has firmly dismissed any notions of retiring from one-day cricket and aspires to participate in the 2027 ODI World Cup. The Yorkshire-born cricketer is eager to witness the Three Lions secure another victory, propelling them closer to the 2023 World Cup semifinals.
While cricketers like Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, and Mark Wood have surpassed their thirties and are unlikely to feature in the upcoming World Cup, England still possesses a robust pool of white-ball talents, suggesting they could maintain their dominance in the years to come.
In a pre-match interview in Delhi before their encounter with Afghanistan, the 32-year-old Root expressed his sentiments, as reported by BBC Sport, saying, “I have a strong desire to continue competing four years from now.”
Emphasizing the importance of adaptability in the current World Cup, Root highlighted how well England rebounded after a loss to New Zealand, stating, “Each team in this competition presents unique challenges. We must remain flexible to counter them. Our focus is on continuous improvement. While we didn’t start as we wished in the first match, our performance against Bangladesh was significantly better.”
Root also stressed England’s ambition to build momentum, remarking, “This presents another opportunity for us to take significant steps forward and maintain the momentum as we approach the crucial stages of this tournament, ensuring that we are in prime form when it matters most.”
