Mominul Haque’s steady play and Akash Deep’s brilliance overshadowed by rain on day one

A dreary, overcast morning in Kanpur delayed the start of the second Test match between India and Bangladesh. After being invited to bat first, Bangladesh’s openers, Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam, played cautiously as Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj effectively used the new ball.

By the end of eight overs, Bangladesh was at 26/0, prompting Rohit Sharma to introduce his third seamer, Akash Deep. This decision proved fruitful, as he dismissed Zakir in his first over.

Deep struck again soon after, removing Islam and giving India a crucial breakthrough. As the pitch settled, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haque built a solid partnership, navigating India’s pace and spin attack with relative ease.

They added 45 runs, bringing Bangladesh’s score to 74/2 by the time lunch was called, accompanied by a light drizzle. After the break, the sun emerged as Ravichandran Ashwin took the ball.

His impact was immediate; in the 29th over, he dismissed the Bangladesh skipper, bringing Mushfiqur Rahim to the crease. Mominul continued to look composed, hitting occasional boundaries to help the score reach 107/3 in 35 overs.

However, dark clouds rolled in again, leading the on-field umpires to check the light. As tension mounted, play was halted due to poor visibility, forcing both teams to retreat to their dressing rooms.

Soon after, heavy rain began, drenching the ground and halting play for the day. With forecasts showing little improvement, match officials decided to call it a day, hoping for better conditions tomorrow.
