Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect, following India’s draw in the third Test against Australia in Brisbane on Wednesday, December 18.
The second-highest wicket-taker for India in Test cricket, Ashwin has brought an end to his illustrious 14-year career, during which he played 106 Tests, with his last match coming in Adelaide earlier in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. His tally of 537 wickets places him seventh on the all-time list.
In addition to his Test career, Ashwin represented India in 116 ODIs and 65 T20Is, claiming 156 and 72 wickets, respectively. However, it was in the red-ball format where he cemented his place as one of Indiaโs greatest match-winners.
Ashwin’s 37 five-wicket hauls in Tests are joint-second on the all-time list, alongside Shane Warne, and only behind Muttiah Muralitharan’s 67. At the time of his retirement, he held the record for dismissing the most left-handed batsmen in Test cricket, with 268 wickets.

A reliable lower-order batter, Ashwin also scored 3,503 runs in Tests, including six centuries and 14 fifties. He holds the Indian record for the most instances (4) of scoring a century and taking a five-wicket haul in the same Test, second only to Ian Botham, who achieved the feat five times.
