The T20 extravaganza, Indian Premier League season 16, is around the corner, and fans are gearing up for yet another exciting season with several star players, including retired and current ones, set to take the field for their respective franchises.
MS Dhoni’s name is making the rounds once again, with the upcoming season possibly being his last as the Chennai Super Kings captain. However, Mumbai Indians Captain Rohit Sharma believes that the four-time IPL-winning captain is still fit to continue playing and has been hearing rumors about Dhoni’s retirement for the past 2-3 years.
“He is still playing. He will continue to play,” Sharma stated during a pre-season press conference of Mumbai Indians.
Having led Chennai to four title victories, MS Dhoni is the IPL’s second most successful captain. In 2021, he stated that he would happily retire after playing his last game in front of his home crowd at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
As the upcoming IPL returns to the home and away format for the first time since 2019, rumors abound that this season will be his last. During a Mumbai Indians pre-match press conference, Rohit Sharma was asked about the possibility of him resting for a few games in the IPL season to manage his workload ahead of the ODI World Cup later this year in India.
The Indian captain avoided the question and directed it to Mumbai Indians head coach Mark Boucher. Boucher expressed that he hopes the MI captain won’t need rest, but if he does, he will be pleased to rest him for one or two games.
