According to reports, Rohit Sharma, the captain of Team India, has reportedly suffered a blow to his thumb during an optional training session on Tuesday, June 6, preceding the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia. The much-anticipated showdown is scheduled to commence at The Oval on Wednesday, June 7.
As per Sportstar’s report, Rohit opted to conclude his practice session promptly after taping his thumb as a precautionary measure to prevent any further harm. Presently, no additional information has been provided regarding the extent of the injury.
During the pre-match press conference, the Indian captain engaged with the media and acknowledged his team’s commendable performance of maintaining consistency throughout the second World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
In the event that the injury is not significant, Rohit Sharma will make his first appearance as the captain of the Indian Test team in an away match. Following Virat Kohli’s decision to step down in early 2022, Rohit assumed leadership responsibilities. However, all of his six Test captaincy outings thus far have taken place on home turf.
Prior to the semi-final match against England at the T20 World Cup 2022, Rohit Sharma had also endured a blow to his forearm during a net session. However, he managed to regain fitness for the game by applying ice and undergoing recovery measures following the incident.
In the notable tour of England in 2021, Rohit Sharma showcased his batting prowess, accumulating an impressive total of 368 runs in four matches with an average of 52.57. His performances, which included a remarkable century at The Oval, garnered significant appreciation as he skillfully navigated challenging situations in unfamiliar conditions.
Unfortunately, Rohit was absent during the rescheduled fifth Test in August 2022 due to contracting COVID-19. Regrettably, India could not secure a series victory as England achieved a memorable triumph at Edgbaston against the away team led by Jasprit Bumrah.
