According to Sunil Gavaskar, India, despite hosting the 2023 ODI World Cup later this year, has not been considered as one of the title contenders. The schedule for the prestigious event was unveiled by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday, June 27.
The opening match will be held in Ahmedabad on October 5, featuring the previous edition’s finalists, England and New Zealand. India, on the other hand, will commence their campaign against Australia in Chennai three days after the tournament opener.
During a discussion on Star Sports, renowned former cricketers were invited to share their thoughts on the title contenders for the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup. When asked to make his selection, Sunil Gavaskar did not include India among the teams he considered as potential champions.
When asked about his top three favorites, Harbhajan Singh expressed his choice by saying, “If I have to select three teams, it would be England, Australia, and India. Considering the pressure associated with this tournament, I believe these three teams have the potential to be strong contenders. Given that the tournament is taking place in India, I would not underestimate the Indian team.”
On October 15, the highly anticipated match between India and Pakistan will take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The Indian team, known as the Men in Blue, will aim to uphold their flawless record against their arch-rivals in 50-over World Cups, seeking to continue their winning streak.
