On Day one of the first Test in Nagpur, India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, confessed that if he had lost the toss to Pat Cummins, he would have also opted to bat first, just like what happened on Thursday.
In the crucial series with much at stake, including the possibility of determining the finalists for the World Test Championship showdown at the Oval from June 7th to 11th, Pat Cummins emerged victorious in the toss and chose to take first strike with the bat.
For the match, India included two new players, Suryakumar Yadav and KS Bharat, in their lineup, with Ravindra Jadeja making a return. However, Shubman Gill and Kuldeep Yadav were not included in the starting eleven.
And there it is! The established partnership has been broken as the new batter was quickly dismissed. Jadeja strikes again, with two wickets in two balls! He delivers a fuller length delivery that turns from round the wicket and strikes the middle, but Renshaw is unable to flick it away as he is beaten by the turn and hit on the pad.
Umpire Nitin Menon immediately raised his finger, and although Renshaw reviewed the decision, the replay showed that the ball was just clipping leg stump, with the umpire’s call staying in place.
