In a thrilling Ashes series finale at The Oval, Australia neared the target of 150 runs during Lunch on Day 5. England struck three quick blows early on, but Australia stood strong at 238/3, thanks to an unbeaten century partnership between Steve Smith and Travis Head.

However, England could have turned the tide if their skipper hadn’t missed a crucial chance due to his overenthusiasm. Before Lunch, Moeen Ali bowled the last over, and he immediately posed a threat to Steve Smith with a beautiful delivery. The ball turned and bounced sharply, touching the gloves of the forward batsman, sending it high towards Ben Stokes at leg slip.

Stokes leaped skillfully and seemed to have caught the ball with his right hand at full stretch, sparking celebrations from the entire England team. But alas, in his excitement while appealing, Stokes inadvertently struck his leg, causing the ball to pop out and land on the grass.

Despite sending the decision for review, the third umpire ruled that Stokes had not been in full control of the ball, and the catch was deemed incomplete.

Although Stokes expressed his displeasure with the decision during an animated discussion with the on-field umpires, his initial reaction had already revealed the missed opportunity, which could have potentially cost England the chance to level the series.
