WATCH : Gunaratne redeems Sri Lanka’s sloppy fielding with a stunning catch in the deep

The opening clash of the Women’s World Cup produced plenty of drama as Sri Lanka Women had India reeling at 124 for 6 after just 27 overs. At that stage, the momentum was firmly with the Lankan Lionesses, who looked set to restrict India to a modest total.

India, however, found their saviors in Deepti Sharma and Amanjot Kaur. The pair showcased composure under pressure, stitching together a century stand that revived India’s innings. While Deepti rotated strike effectively and kept the scoreboard moving, Kaur played with aggression and confidence, marking her presence in her maiden World Cup outing.

Kaur, in particular, stood out with a fine half-century—her first in Women’s ODI World Cup cricket. She scored 57 off 56 balls, laced with five fours and a towering six. Her fluent innings not only steadied the ship but also gave India much-needed momentum heading into the final overs.

However, her attacking intent always carried a sense of risk. During her stay at the crease, Kaur offered multiple half-chances, but Sri Lanka’s fielders failed to capitalize. That fortune eventually ran out in the 44th over, when she tried to slog on the third delivery of the over and miscued her shot.

This time, Vishmi Gunaratne made no mistake in the deep. Diving forward at deep mid-wicket, she completed a clean catch to end Kaur’s valiant knock. The breakthrough brought relief to Sri Lanka and finally broke the partnership that had kept India afloat.
