WATCH : India’s Big Total and the Wide-Ball Call That Sparked Debate

India were put into bat at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur and responded with a powerful total of 358/5 in the second ODI. Virat Kohli struck 102 and Ruturaj Gaikwad scored his maiden ODI century with 105. Their 195-run stand for the third wicket lifted India after both openers fell cheaply.

South Africa began their chase with intent as Aiden Markram took charge despite an early setback. He played confidently from the start and went on to score a brilliant 110 off 98 balls. Along with captain Temba Bavuma, he added 101 runs for the second wicket to keep the visitors well in the hunt.

Once Markram and Bavuma were dismissed, Matthew Breetzke and Dewald Brevis took over the responsibility. Brevis, known for his fearless style, shifted gears quickly and targeted Harshit Rana in the 40th over. He smashed the pacer for two huge sixes, bringing South Africa firmly back into the contest.

On the very next ball, Rana missed his yorker and drifted it down the leg side. KL Rahul collected it cleanly, and the umpire called it a wide without hesitation. The decision upset both the bowler and the keeper, who felt the ball had brushed the pads and should not have been signalled wide.

Rana reacted sharply, gesturing toward the umpire and questioning how it could be called a wide. Rahul also appeared frustrated as they both tried to argue their point. But the umpire stayed confident in his judgement and refused to change the decision.

Replays soon made things clear. UltraEdge showed no spike at all as the ball passed the batter, proving the wide call was absolutely correct. Sunil Gavaskar pointed out on commentary that the reactions were unnecessary, and fans online agreed, saying Rana had overreacted in the heat of the moment.
