The second Ashes Test match has reached a thrilling turning point, with Australia, the reigning champions of the World Test Championship (WTC), firmly in control. After concluding day three at 130/2, the Australians have built a commanding lead of 221 runs. England now faces a daunting task of altering the course of the match.

One standout performer, Steve Smith, who achieved his 32nd Test century in the first innings, stands resolute at the crease. The Australian stalwart is eager to add another century to his already impressive record. However, it was an incident of sledging during the closing session of day three that stole the spotlight.

England’s wicket-keeper, Jonny Bairstow, attempted to unsettle Smith with some remarks, but it backfired. The stump microphone captured Bairstow approaching Smith and commenting on his unorthodox crease movements, humorously suggesting that Smith was auditioning for a spot on “Strictly Australia,” a popular dance show.

Smith, seemingly unaware of the reference, responded with a simple question, “What’s that?” Bairstow then proceeded to explain the concept of the dance show, much to Smith’s amusement. The star batsman, with a dismissive tone, replied, “I wouldn’t have thought so,” transforming the sledging attempt into light-hearted banter.

However, not everyone appreciated the jovial exchange. Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen, who was commentating at the time, expressed his frustration. Pietersen criticized Bairstow’s approach, claiming it deviated from the spirit of Ashes cricket. He fondly recalled the intensity of past contests, stating, “During my 30 games against Australia, we used to be on the stairs, eagerly waiting for the Aussies to come out and bat.”
