The toss was won by MS Dhoni, who elected to bowl first. Mumbai Indians had a terrible start with Rohit Sharma opting to open with Cameron Green ahead of Ishan Kishan, which proved to be an unsuccessful experiment.
Tushar Deshpande dismissed Green in the second over, and in the following over, Deepak Chahar took out both Ishan and Rohit, with the latter getting his fourth single-digit score this season and second consecutive duck.
Prior to the match, Rohit had mentioned during the toss that Tilak Varma was out due to an injury, and Tristan Stubbs replaced him. Chennai Super Kings have only earned one point from their last three games and are seeking to turn their campaign around when they face a resurgent Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League.
Although the four-time champions will have to be cautious of MI, who has a better record at the MA Chidambaram stadium and has won the previous two matches.
Rohit Sharma has now scored four single-digit scores in a row, with his latest innings resulting in his second consecutive duck. During the fifth ball of his innings, Dhoni had come up to the stumps, and Rohit attempted a shot that was completely out of character for him.
