In the 7th match of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) at Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy, Navi Mumbai, Mumbai Indians showed their supremacy over Delhi Capitals on Thursday. The table-toppers clashed, and Harmanpreet Kaur and her team dominated Meg Lanning’s DC with their exceptional bowling, proving to be too strong for the star-studded opposition.
Having chosen to bat, Delhi Capitals lost Shafali Verma early on, followed by Alice Capsey and Marizanne Kapp in quick succession. However, Lanning and Jemimah Rodrigues provided some stability to the innings by stitching a 50-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
Unfortunately, DC’s innings collapsed from 81/3 to 105 all out in a short span of time. Saika Ishaque and Hayley Matthews spun a web around the DC batters, sharing three wickets each, while the 20-year-old pacer Issy Wong also had a fantastic outing with figures of 4-0-10-3.
In a subpar chase, Yastika Bhatia (41 off 32 balls) and Matthews (32 off 31 balls) formed an impressive 65-run opening partnership, ensuring there would be no suspense whatsoever. Nat Sciver-Brunt and Harmanpreet Kaur then finished the job by putting together an unbeaten 32-run partnership for the fourth wicket, taking MI past the finish line with 30 balls to spare.
Next up, Delhi Capitals will face Gujarat Giants at the same venue on March 11, while MI will take on UP Warriorz the following day at Brabourne Stadium.
