England set new records at Multan Cricket Stadium, surpassing Pakistan’s first innings total of 556 with three wickets still in hand on Wednesday.
Joe Root and Harry Brook were instrumental in this monumental batting display, both achieving double centuries during the morning session of Day 4 and forming a remarkable 400-run partnership—only the 16th of its kind in Test history.
While both appeared on track for their first triple centuries, Root fell just short after lunch, ending an impressive 454-run stand.
In the 137th over, Root misjudged a delivery from Salman Agha Ali, resulting in a plumb lbw decision. He began his walk back to the pavilion before the umpire’s call, his expression stoic.
A cheer erupted from the crowd, a mix of relief and admiration for one of cricket’s greats. The Pakistani players showed their respect, with each one shaking hands with Root after his marathon 375-ball innings of 262.

Harry Brook, at the other end, along with the umpire and incoming batter Jamie Smith, offered their congratulations, and Root received a standing ovation as he left the field.
