There’s been widespread speculation about Rohit Sharma’s future in white-ball cricket for Team India following their devastating loss in the 2023 World Cup final against Australia. Understandably, Rohit appeared deeply affected, and like most of the squad, he’ll require time to recuperate from the setback.
As the upcoming T20 World Cup is slated to be held in the West Indies and the USA in June next year, the lingering question remains whether Rohit will participate in the shortest format. During the launch of CricKingdom Academy in the USA earlier this year in August, Rohit Sharma hinted at his potential involvement in the T20 World Cup 2024. He expressed anticipation for the event, stating:
“Beyond just the enjoyment of being here (in the USA), there’s another reason. Because you know the World Cup is coming. In June, the T20 World Cup (2024) will take place in this part of the world. So, I’m pretty sure everyone is excited. So yeah, we look forward to that.”
Rohit Sharma hasn’t featured in T20Is for India since their loss to England in the 2022 T20 World Cup semifinal in Adelaide last year. Over the past year, selectors have entrusted Hardik Pandya with captaincy while introducing new faces into the T20 squad.
Rohit Sharma said – More than just going & enjoying there is an other reason to come here. Bcoz you knw the WC is coming, In June there will be T20 World Cup(2024) happening, I'm pretty sure everyone is excited. We look forward to that.

Despite Rohit officially holding the all-format captaincy for Team India, it remains intriguing to see if he stages a T20I comeback. While numerous reports have hinted at his potential retirement from the shortest format, no definitive statement has been made by either the board or the player. With Hardik reportedly sidelined due to injury until IPL 2024, India’s strategy moving forward becomes an area of interest and curiosity.
