India began Day 2 of the first Test against South Africa with a steady approach as overnight batters KL Rahul and Washington Sundar added just 25 runs in the opening 10 overs. The duo picked up occasional boundaries and gradually built a 57-run stand for the second wicket, inching closer to South Africa’s first-innings total.
However, with the score at 75, Sundar fell to off-spinner Simon Harmer, bringing captain Shubman Gill to the crease. Looking to break the pressure early, Gill played a confident slog sweep off just his third delivery, picking up his first boundary.
Moments later, things took an unexpected turn. As Gill moved around the crease, he suddenly appeared uncomfortable, grabbing his neck and wincing in visible pain. He removed his helmet and tried stretching, prompting Rahul to walk over in concern.
The physio, already alert at the boundary line, rushed in to assess the situation. After a quick evaluation, it was decided that Gill should retire hurt. The Indian skipper walked off with clear discomfort while the physio carried his bat alongside him.
