WATCH : SKY pleads umpire at his polite best for third umpire referral

Chennai Super Kings, led by an explosive Ruturaj Gaikwad, stormed to 62 runs in the powerplay while chasing a modest target of 156 against Mumbai Indians in their season opener at Chepauk.

Gaikwad’s fiery 67-run partnership with Rachin Ravindra for the second wicket came off just 37 balls, and by the time Gaikwad was dismissed in the eighth over, Chennai was nearly cruising at a run-a-ball pace, putting Mumbai under immense pressure.

Suryakumar Yadav, visibly frustrated as the stand-in captain, could sense his team was heading for a 13th consecutive season opener defeat. He tried everything to halt Chennai’s charge.

In the 10th over, T20 debutant Vignesh Puthur delivered a sharp ball across Shivam Dube, who attempted a big heave but failed to make contact, losing his balance in the process. Ryan Rickelton was quick to remove the bails for a stumping appeal, but the square-leg umpire turned it down.

The decision clearly irked the stand-in captain, and a frustrated Suryakumar’s voice rang out on the stump mic: “Sir, check to karlo, upar tha [Sir, at least check, his leg was raised],” as he demonstrated with a raised foot.

Despite his protests, the umpire stuck to his decision, and replays confirmed that Dube’s foot never left the crease, making the call perfectly valid.

The incident stirred up Twitter, where fans highlighted the growing frustration of Mumbai’s season opener woes.
