On February 8, the opening day of the third quarterfinal at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, Haryana fast bowler Sumit Kumar made an early impact, dismissing star batter Suryakumar Yadav for just 9 runs.
After several outswingers, Sumit surprised Yadav with a well-placed good-length delivery that jagged in sharply. Yadav failed to read the line, and the ball sent the middle stump flying as it crashed to the ground.
Mumbai, who won the toss and opted to bat, struggled against Haryana’s bowlers. By the time lunch was called, Mumbai had already lost 5 wickets and had yet to reach 70 runs.
Haryana’s star bowler, Anshul Khamboj, struck early, dismissing Mumbai’s opener Ayush Mhatre for a golden duck. Sumit followed up by sending Akash Anand back for just 10 runs, and then Siddesh Lad was dismissed for 4 runs, leaving Mumbai in a dire situation at 14 runs.
Suryakumar Yadav became Sumit’s second victim after Mhatre, allowing Shivam Dube to step in. Just as a partnership seemed to be building between Dube and captain Ajinkya Rahane (14*), Ajith Chahal broke the stand by getting Dube caught by Yashvardhan Dalal for 28, which turned out to be the highest score for any Mumbai batter.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal between defending champions Mumbai and Haryana, originally scheduled to be held in Lahli, Haryana, was moved to Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had informed both teams about the venue change in advance to avoid disruptions from weather conditions in Lahli, even during the winter season.
