In the 2023 Indian Premier League match held at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday, the Mumbai Indians clinched an impressive victory over the Gujarat Titans, beating them by a margin of 27 runs. The Mumbai-based team produced a remarkable performance with the bat, scoring a mammoth total of 218/5, led by Suryakumar Yadav who finally achieved his maiden century in the league, scoring an unbeaten 103 runs and reaching the three-figure mark on the final ball of the innings.
The Mumbai Indians’ bowlers also made a dominant start and had the Gujarat Titans in trouble, reducing them to 103/8 in the 14th over before Rashid Khan’s unbeaten 79 off just 32 deliveries helped reduce the gap of the defeat.
Eventually, the Gujarat Titans ended up with a score of 191/8 in the game, however, they remain at the top of the table with eight wins to their name. In the Gujarat Titans’ innings, they lost their first three wickets within the first 24 deliveries, but Vijay Shankar gave them a glimmer of hope with an aggressive start, scoring 29 off just 13 deliveries, hitting six boundaries.
However, Piyush Chawla, the Mumbai Indians’ leg-spinner, outsmarted him with a brilliant delivery, a wrong ‘un, on the very first ball of his spell. Shankar was deceived by the ball, committing to a forward defensive shot, and the ball went past the inside edge, hitting the off-stump.
Following the dismissal of Shankar, the Gujarat Titans’ wickets fell rapidly, with Abhinav Manohar (2), David Miller (41), and Rahul Tewatia (14) all getting out cheaply. Despite the Titans’ defeat, Rashid’s blistering knock towards the end of the game helped them maintain a healthy Net Run Rate of +0.761, keeping them at the top of the table. Meanwhile, the Mumbai Indians are third in the table with 14 points in twelve matches.
