Abhishek Porel, the wicket-keeper for Delhi Capitals, impressed with his keeping skills despite making a minimal impact with the bat. He was chosen over Rishabh Pant for his primary skillset and preferred over Sarfaraz Khan in the playing XI.
However, in Match 20 of IPL 2023 at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, he almost cost DC a wicket of well-set Mahipal Lomror. Lomror, who came to bat at No. 3 for RCB, struggled initially but managed to hit two quick sixes to regain his rhythm.
However, on the third ball of the 13th over, he got a thin nick behind the stumps off a cross-seam delivery by Mitchell Marsh. Marsh appealed confidently, but Porel wasn’t convinced about the nick.
After discussing with Porel, David Warner decided to challenge the decision, and it was proved that Lomror was indeed out. Amidst the celebrations, Porel received a friendly scolding from Axar Patel, one of DC’s experienced players. The incident sparked reactions on social media.
David Warner made an unusual decision by going against the norm of on-field skippers relying on wicketkeepers for DRS calls. Instead, he trusted his countryman Mitchell Marsh’s opinion, which proved to be correct and resulted in a successful review. However, this decision led to Abhishek Porel receiving a friendly scolding from Axar Patel.
