In the 3rd ODI against New Zealand, Ishan Kishan appeared to intentionally get out for the benefit of senior player Virat Kohli, scoring 17 runs. On the 3rd delivery of the 35th over, Kishan hit the ball and immediately called for a run, with Kohli quickly leaving his position and running towards the opposite end.
Fielder Henry Nicholls quickly collected the ball and threw it to the wicketkeeper, resulting in Kishan being run out. Replays revealed that Kishan had deliberately given up his wicket for Kohli’s benefit, as he could have easily returned to his crease but instead chose to let Kohli make it to the other end.
As he walked back to the pavilion, the wicketkeeper-batsman, Ishan Kishan, clearly showed his frustration and disappointment to Kohli. Kishan had not had a successful time at bat, taking 24 balls to score just 17 runs.
After Kishan’s dismissal, Virat Kohli, who was shouldering a significant responsibility, only managed to add 9 more runs to his score and was out for 36 off 27 balls. He was caught by mid-off fielder Blair Tickner.
While other players were struggling to score big runs, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill had a successful day at the crease, both scoring centuries. Sharma was the first to reach his 30th ODI century, hitting 101 off 85 balls. It was his first ODI century since January 2020.
Shubman Gill, who is having a successful run in ODI cricket, scored his 3rd century of the year. He had begun the series with a double-century and once again reached the milestone. Together, Sharma and Gill added 212 runs for the first wicket. However, since then India lost 4 wickets for 72 runs.
