Bumrah’s most recent bowling contribution took place during an ODI against England in July 2022. However, the right-arm fast bowler suffered a recurrence of his back injury later in the year, during a T20I series against Australia, which forced him to be sidelined for an extended period.
Bumrah had to undergo surgery and completed his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. He finally made his comeback as the captain of the national team in a three-match T20I series against Ireland in August 2023.
In the first two matches of that series, the 29-year-old put up an impressive performance, taking four wickets and helping secure a series victory. Unfortunately, the final match in Malahide was washed out due to rain.
Bumrah also featured in India’s Asia Cup opener against Pakistan in Pallekele, contributing a crucial cameo of 16 runs despite the game being abandoned midway due to incessant rain. His contribution helped India reach a competitive total of 266.
Bumrah’s absence from the team may provide an opportunity for Mohammed Shami to gain valuable playing time in Pallekele. Shami had recently been given a break from the Caribbean tour following the World Test Championship Final.
India is currently the favorite to advance to the Super Four stage, needing either a win or a washout against neighboring Nepal. As things stand, their next game in the tournament is scheduled against Pakistan on September 10 in Colombo. Reports also suggest that Bumrah has been granted time off to attend the birth of his child.
