Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa lavished praise on Shreyas Iyer, emphasizing the batter’s remarkable return to form following a period of injury.

Uthappa expressed his admiration for Iyer’s performance in the second ODI of India’s ongoing three-match series against Australia, viewing it as a promising indicator for the upcoming World Cup in 2023. He also suggested that the gifted batsman might evolve into a potential candidate for captaincy down the road.

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Uthappa shared his thoughts): “Shreyas Iyer, what a sigh of relief! It’s been a long time in the making. We’ve always recognized him as a top-tier player. In my estimation, he has the potential to lead the Indian team in the future. Shreyas is an incredibly consistent player, and he demonstrated precisely why with that outstanding century against Australia. The tempo at which he batted, his impeccable control, and his strong connection with the ball – it was all on display. After a couple of low scores and a sudden injury setback, it’s not easy to come back like that. It truly reflects his immense character.”

Iyer made his comeback to India’s ODI squad following an injury during the Asia Cup in 2023. Regrettably, he experienced a back spasm during the tournament, which prevented him from participating in the Super 4s matches and the final.

To compound his challenges, Iyer was dismissed for a mere three runs in the opening match of the ODI series against Australia. Nevertheless, he made amends with a spectacular century in the subsequent game, scoring an impressive 105 runs from 90 deliveries in Indore.

Furthermore, Robin Uthappa commended the remarkable performance of Team India opener Shubman Gill this year and expressed his confidence in Gill’s ability to maintain his exceptional form at the 2023 World Cup.
