Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has made a projection that Rohit Sharma, the current captain of Team India, is likely to emerge as the top run-scorer in the upcoming 2023 World Cup. Sehwag elaborated that due to the favorable batting conditions in India, the opening batsmen will have ample opportunities to shine during the imminent ODI World Cup.
Scheduled to take place in India from October 5 to November 19, the 2023 ODI World Cup will commence with the Indian team facing Australia in Chennai on October 8. In a video shared on the ICC’s Instagram account, Sehwag was prompted to foresee the leading run-scorer of the 2023 World Cup, to which he designated Rohit and stated:
“Given the quality of pitches in India, I believe the opening batsmen will enjoy favorable conditions. If I were to select one player, it would be Rohit Sharma. While there are a few contenders, my allegiance is to the Indian team, and hence my choice is Rohit Sharma.”
Commending the abilities of the Indian opener, Sehwag went on to highlight that Rohit’s performance tends to escalate during major tournaments like the World Cup.
“When the World Cup arrives, his enthusiasm and performance tend to elevate. Therefore, I have confidence that he will excel once again. Furthermore, he holds the captaincy this time, which I believe will have a positive impact. I am optimistic that he will make a significant contribution by accumulating a substantial number of runs,” Sehwag concluded.
Rohit Sharma had claimed the title of highest run-scorer in the 2019 ODI World Cup hosted by England, amassing an impressive 648 runs in nine matches, averaging 81, and hitting five centuries. In his overall One Day International career spanning 244 matches, the 36-year-old cricketer has accumulated 9837 runs at an average of 48.69, marked by 30 centuries and 48 half-centuries.
