Washington Sundar called up as back-up for injured Axar Patel

Washington Sundar has been summoned to join the Indian team in Colombo as a replacement for Axar Patel. Axar Patel encountered some injury concerns while batting against Bangladesh on Friday night and required medical attention on multiple occasions.

Given the uncertainty surrounding Axar’s availability for the final, India has opted to bring in Washington Sundar. The versatile all-rounder is part of India’s squad for the Asian Games and will join the team later today.

Washington’s inclusion is not surprising, especially considering that Sri Lanka’s batting lineup features a couple of left-handers at the top. His off-spin bowling skills will be valuable, and he can also be utilized during the initial powerplay overs.

Batting at the eighth position, Axar Patel managed to score 42 runs off 34 deliveries in an innings that included three boundaries and two sixes. However, he sustained two injuries during his innings, one to his fingers and another to his left hand.

Axar has suffered several injuries alongside a hamstring injury, making it difficult for him to play in the Asia Cup 2023 final. During batting, the ball also hit Axar’s hand at a considerable speed, after which he showed signs of pain.
