MI put RR to bat upon winning the toss. MI skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to field first at Sharjah. Rohit made two changes in his playing XI. He replaced Ishan Kishan with Quinton De Kock and Jimmy Neesham in place of Krunal Pandya. Sanju Samson also came up with two changes. Shreyas Gopal comes in for Mayank Markande and Kuldip Yadav comes in for Akash Singh.

MI and RR are two teams who are desperate for a win after winning 5 out of 12 matches. Both the teams are in need of two wins in their last two matches to qualify for the playoffs.

RR lost the wicket of in-form batsmen Yashasvi Jaiswal quite early in the innings. Jaiswal scored 9 off 12 deliveries before being dismissed by Nathan Coulter Nile. Soon after the removal of Jaiswal, Evin Lewis and Sanju Samson lost their wicket too. Shivam Dube did not stick in the pitch for much longer as he was removed cheaply by James Neesham. Rajasthan Royals top order dismantled completely in front of MI bowlers.

In the 10th over of the match, skipper Rohit Sharma brought Nathan Coulter Nile back into the attack searching for a breakthrough. When Coulter Nile came to bowl the 10th over, RR were struggling at 49/4.

Coulter Nile removed Glenn Phillips in the third ball of the over. Coulter Nile bowled a gentle delivery onto the leg stump. Phillips went across trying to flick the ball. Once again, the pitch did the work for MI. The ball did not bounce as much the batsmen expected as it kept itself low. Phillips did try that to an extent but he played too far across the line looking to pull and it went right through the legs. The ball went through the gate between the bat and the pad and hit the stumps. The dismissal looks very bad on the replay when the ball goes on to hit the stumps.

RR look in great trouble after losing 5 wickets before the completion of 10 overs. RR scored 55/5 halfway through the innings.
