During the IPL 2024 match against Punjab Kings at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur on April 18th, Mumbai Indians’ batsman Tim David signaled his teammate Suryakumar Yadav to review a wide ball from the dugout using the Decision Review System (DRS).
The incident occurred in the 15th over when Punjab Kings’ bowler Arshdeep Singh delivered a wide ball to Suryakumar Yadav. Despite the on-field umpire not signaling it as a wide, and SKY hesitating to take the review, Tim David, observing from the dugout, urged Suryakumar to utilize the DRS after viewing the replay on TV, believing it was a wide ball, a sentiment echoed by head coach Mark Boucher.
Punjab Kings’ bowler Sam Curran immediately raised the issue with the on-field umpire, but the umpire disregarded his protest and referred the decision to the third umpire for review. The incident quickly gained attention on social media.
Following the third umpire’s review, on-field umpire Vineet Kulkarni deemed Arshdeep Singh’s delivery a wide ball. At the time of the review, Mumbai Indians were 126/2 in 14.5 overs, with Suryakumar Yadav batting on 63. The right-handed batsman eventually scored 78 off 53 balls before being dismissed by PBKS skipper Sam Curran.
