In the second T20I of the three-match series against New Zealand, Team India played at the Ekana stadium in Lucknow. During the run chase of 100 runs, Suryakumar Yadav and Washington Sundar had a miscommunication which resulted in Sundar’s dismissal.
In the match, New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat first. Despite the difficulty of the surface, they were only able to score 99 runs for 8 wickets in their 20 overs. With a little more effort, they could have scored more runs.
The Indian bowlers were exceptional, restricting New Zealand to a score of under 100. The Kiwi batters also contributed to this low score with poor batting. Mitchell Santner was the only batter who performed well, scoring 19 runs, the most for his team.
During the 15th over of the run chase, bowled by Glenn Philips, Suryakumar Yadav attempted a reverse sweep but only made contact with his pad. The ball rolled towards point, as New Zealand appealed for lbw. Yadav decided to take off for a single, but it was Washington’s call to make. However, Washington had his hand up signaling to stop, but Yadav continued running.
Ultimately, Washington Sundar made the decision to sacrifice himself. The third umpire was consulted to confirm if they had successfully completed a run. He also reviewed the lbw, which showed the ball had made contact with Sundar’s glove.
