In a recent YouTube video, AB de Villiers, the former captain of South Africa’s cricket team, expressed his belief that Indian opener Shubman Gill could emerge as the leading run-scorer in the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. De Villiers emphasized Gill’s strong prospects due to his role as an opening batsman, stating that he has a significant chance of topping the batting charts at this prestigious event.

Highlighting Gill’s remarkable form this year, De Villiers confidently asserted, “I predict that Shubman Gill will claim the title of the highest run-scorer in the World Cup. He is currently in exceptional form. I’ve always leaned towards selecting an opening batter, or at the very least, a No. 3 batter.”

De Villiers also praised Gill’s batting technique, describing it as refreshingly uncomplicated. He pointed out that Gill’s ability to adapt to different match situations would pose a considerable challenge to bowlers.

De Villiers explained, “Shubman Gill possesses a straightforward and traditional technique, much like some of the world’s best players. While there are exceptions, like Steve Smith, Gill’s approach is more conventional and doesn’t rely on trying too many unorthodox methods. He can shift gears effortlessly and apply immense pressure on bowlers.”

“His remarkable skill in quickly gauging the length of deliveries is a trait shared by some of the world’s finest players. Shubman Gill is rapidly evolving into one of those exceptional talents, excelling across all formats. He is a very exciting young cricketer, and despite his youth, he already appears to be an experienced campaigner.”

Notably, Shubman Gill has been in outstanding form this year, amassing a total of 1,764 runs across various formats. This remarkable performance makes him the leading run-scorer in 2023.
