It is expected that Shreyas Iyer will have to undergo surgery to address his persistent lower back problem, which will likely keep him out of action for approximately 4 to 5 months. The Indian cricketer has been troubled by this injury for some time now, which led to his absence from the ongoing ODI series against Australia.

He had also been forced to sit out the first Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy, and had to withdraw from the fourth Test due to his injury. The skilled batsman appears to be on track to miss the upcoming IPL season. As the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, his absence will be a major setback for the team.

Additionally, his recovery timeline suggests he may also miss the WTC Final against Australia in June, and may be racing against time to return for the 50-over World Cup later this year. While Iyer’s unavailability for the WTC Final will be a disappointment for India, KKR must urgently find a new captain for the imminent IPL season, which starts in just 10 days.

According to a source close to Iyer, he has been advised to undergo surgery, with a preference for a specialist in London, although he is also exploring options in India. Reports suggest he is exploring ayurvedic treatment for his back injury and has consulted with a spine specialist in Mumbai.

In January, Iyer was unable to participate in the white ball series against New Zealand due to his lower back injury. In addition to this recent setback, the Mumbai batsman had also missed a significant amount of cricket, including the 2021 T20 World Cup, due to a shoulder injury.
