During the Women’s Premier League (WPL) fixture between Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Giants at Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai, Marizanne Kapp was the shining star of the day. After receiving the new ball from Meg Lanning, the South African all-rounder bowled four consecutive overs and managed to take five wickets, giving away only 15 runs, almost single-handedly reducing the Giants to a score of 33/6.
Marizanne Kapp’s accomplishments were remarkable, as all of her five wickets were taken either through clean bowled or leg before dismissals. The players who fell victim to her impeccable bowling skills were Sabbhineni Meghana, Laura Wolvaardt, Harleen Deol, Ashleigh Gardner, and Sushma Verma.
These wickets drew particular attention as her spouse and former South African captain, Dane van Niekerk, had publicly announced her retirement from international cricket less than three hours before the game started.
On the other hand, Dane van Niekerk, who is currently playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore, was present in the stadium to witness Kapp’s remarkable performance against the Giants. Van Niekerk was all smiles from the sidelines after Kapp took five wickets, which drew a lot of attention from Twitter users.
It is worth mentioning that Kapp became the third bowler, following Kim Garth and Tara Norris, to take a five-wicket haul in WPL.
