Chennai Super Kings finally handed Dewald Brevis his IPL 2025 debut, and the young South African didn’t disappoint. Facing Sunrisers Hyderabad at Chepauk Stadium, Brevis made an immediate impact, injecting energy into a CSK side desperate for a turnaround.
In a campaign where very little has gone CSK’s way, Brevis delivered a much-needed spark with a fearless knock of 42 off just 25 balls. His attacking intent at the top brought early momentum and stood out as a rare positive in an otherwise tough season for the men in yellow.
Signed as a replacement for Gurjapneet Singh, Brevis entered the field at No. 5 with a ‘Bahubali-style’ warm-up that quickly went viral on social media. His flair wasn’t just for show—his performance drew praise from both MS Dhoni and head coach Stephen Fleming after the match.
Fleming was particularly impressed, calling Brevis “refreshing” in the post-match press conference. He noted how CSK, in their search for answers, have tried various combinations, using 20 of their 27 players this season. Amidst all the changes, Brevis stood out for his confidence and bold approach.
Despite missing the previous game against Mumbai Indians, Brevis was brought in as part of a reshuffled XI against SRH. Fleming admitted that such frequent changes are unusual for CSK, saying, “You don’t want it to come along. It’s an unwanted bonus.”

With seven losses in nine matches, CSK’s playoff hopes now rely on a mathematical miracle. Yet, amid the uncertainty, players like Brevis and Ayush Mhatre offer a glimmer of what the next generation might bring. CSK will next face Punjab Kings at Chepauk on April 30.
